Formatting New Hard Drives

I remember Glenn Meder telling us about reformating a new drive after he bought it. What would be all the reasons for doing this (trojan horse or virus malicously inserted into new HD,…)?

I recently got a new mobile SSD drive. Was wondering if anybody has any idea how to do the reformat. I am using MacOS as my main OS. Am wondering as well if it could be the same drive which I could use to backup stuff from my Above Phone.
