Frequntly Asked Quetion (FAQ)

Q. What is the best way to talk to my children about online privacy?

A.
This is one of the most important questions, and it’s also quite difficult to answer. Here are my thoughts on the matter…
Tell them the truth. They can take it.I think the most important point to convey is why they should care about privacy. A good place to start is to show them this video and discuss it.Also watch this video.Ask them why they think Google and other Big Tech companies want all of your information? The answer is that information is power, and companies and countries that have information about us, have power over us.If you own an iPhone, go to the app store and look up the TikTok app and click on it (don’t download it). Then scroll down below the reviews and you will see an image that tell you all the data that TikTok gathers about its users.
This image shows you all the data that the TikTok app is collecting about its users. To summarize the image above, TikTok is gathering every ounce of data that it can about you. Why? If TikTok is a simple social media app, why do they need to know your financial information, your browsing history, your location every minute of every day?
Also look at the other apps on your phone. Why do simple game apps want to collect just as much data? It is an invasion of your privacy, and they do it in a deceitful way without your knowledge and without your consent. Talk to your children about the importance of consent.
You can also…Talk about the US Constitution and its purpose. The Constitution is designed to protect our freedoms by limiting the power of government, because those in power ALWAYS want more power. This has always been true, it is true now and it always will be true. Government and Big Tech will try to tell you that the only people who want privacy are people who are doing things that are wrong, but this is not true. Privacy is our right and we have to fight for our privacy.
I hope this gives you a good place to start with connecting with your children. If your children are older, you may want to show them the webinar replay from the other night.
